Sporting Events

Chinese Dance Workshop (March 2016)

In March 2016, our Year 1 and 2 pupils enjoyed learning about the history and tradition of Chinese dancing as part of a special workshop.  The morning culminated with the children performing a dragon and a fan dance to the rest of the school.  A truly colourful performance!

 

 

Rugby World Cup Day (September 2015)

On Friday 18th September 2015, Slip End celebrated the start of the Rugby World Cup. Children worked in mixed aged teams throughout the morning to research the various countries taking part in the competition.  In the afternoon a special assembly showcased their work, 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' was sung and some of the children performed their own haka. The day was a huge success and a great opportunity for the whole school to work together and demonstrate the values of cooperation and teamwork. 

Olympic Day (June 2015)

From Reception to Year 4 our children took part in Olympic Day by completing these 4 events:

  • ​How far can they run in 5 minutes?
  • How far can they throw the javelin?
  • How far can they jump?
  • How many laps can they complete in their teams over the hurdles?
Each class discussed the Olympic and Paralympic values and how they can use these within sport and in their classrooms. All of the children worked extremely hard and thoroughly enjoyed all four activities.
 
   
 

Tag Rugby Festival at Dunstablians - 22/06/2015 Year 2.

The Year 2's were coached by coaches from Dunstablians rugby club in 6 different activities. These included speed and agility games, movement games, tackling exercises, passing games and mini sided games of tag rugby. This was followed by a tournament against the other schools present which was a great experience for our children.

PE Assembly (April 2015)

In April 2015 Slip End Lower School held a special PE Celebration Assembly for parents to showcase the PE Curriculum and the impact of the PE and Sport Funding.  All pupils from Reception to Year 4 took part.  Reception pupils demonstrated their balancing and bean bag skills, Year 2 pupils demonstrated their catchy afternoon aerobic activity, Year 1 and 3 pupils showed their PE books (which were newly introduced this year) and which help children to evaluate their performance in PE; they also gave facts and figures about the impact that PE had shown with regards to both their knowledge and fitness.  Finally, Year 4 showed a wonderful slide show to music of their road to the Partnership Indoor Athletics area finals.  A wonderful assembly which hopefully has inspired the whole school community to increase their fitness levels.

 

'Chance to Shine' Cricket Coaching (May 2015)

Pupils in Years 2 and 4 are currently receiving professional Cricket coaching as part of their PE curriculum

 

Chinese Dance Workshop (April 2015)

Pupils in Years 1 and 2 enjoyed learning about the history and tradition of Chinese dancing as part of a special, visiting workshop. Following a morning of learning steps and routines, the children performed a dragon and a parasol dance to the rest of the school.  A truly colourful performance!

     

Luton Town Football Coaching (March 2015)

Our pupils enjoyed taking part in a 6 week football training course led by a professional football coach.  

 

Partnership Indoor Athletics Competition (Autumn 2014 and Spring 2015)

Pupils in Years 2 and 4 took part in the Partnership Indoor Athletics Competition.  Year 4 pupils won their event and went on to compete in the area finals. A huge well done to everyone

     

Stockwood Athletics Trip (July 2014)

Pupils from Years 1 to 4 descended on Stockwood Park's Athletics track to experience what it might be like to train as an athlete and take part in a range of specialised events such as the long jump.

Pupils had opportunities to develop their Math and Writing skills as well as test and improve their own fitness levels.

Cricket Trip to The Oval (July 2014)

Pupils, teachers and parents enjoyed a fantastic trip to watch a cricket game at the Oval on Friday 27th June 2014.  The opportunity to watch professional competitive sport and soak up the atmosphere of the cricket ground was inspirational.  Thank you to Mr O'Brien and Mr. Burgess for organising this wonderful event.

    

World Cup Mufti Day (July 2014)

Promoting Knowledge of the World and Cultural Diversity was the focus of our whole school World Cup Mufti Day in addition to promoting a passion for sport.  Pupils came to school dressed in the colours of a team of their choosing and brought in research about a country which they had completed as part of their homework. Pupils then worked in groups to share facts and deepen their research. They then decorated the school with their work.

Staff Training (July 2014)

Staff from Slip End Lower School and Caddington Village School took part in PE training led by Mr. O'Brien.  Different methods of using Numeracy in PE and PE in Numeracy were demonstrated and staff had the opportunity to take part in 'Numeracy in Action'.
